EMT/BASIC FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION We are providing the following position description for EMT/Basic from the Commonwealth of Kentucky Cabinet for Human Resources Emergency Medical Services Branch. This is a guide in understanding the qualifications, competencies and tasks that are expected of the EMT/Basic. Qualifications * Successful completion of approved curriculum. * Achievement of passing scores on written and practical certification examination. * Successful completion of a two (2) hour AIDS education course approved by the Cabinet for Human Resources as required by KRS 311A.110. Minimum Requirements - 202KAR 7:301.EMT * Be at least 16 years of age. * High school graduate or equivalent. * Current and valid Kentucky certification as an Emergency Medical Technician. * Current and valid certification in CPR from the American Heart Association, the American National Red Cross or the National Safety Council. * Have a current and valid Driver’s license. Special Requirements * Ability to communicate verbally; via telephone and radio equipment. * Ability to lift, carry and balance up to 125 pounds (250 pounds with assistance). * Ability to interpret written, oral, and diagnostic form instructions. * Ability to use good judgment and remain calm in high-stress situations. * Ability to endure high-risk situations; i.e., entering areas or structures where violent or criminal activities may have precipitated a medical emergency. * Ability to calculate weight and volume ratios. * Ability to read manuals, encyclopedias, and road maps. * Ability to accurately discern and identify street signs and address numbers. * Ability to interview patient family members and by-standers. * Ability to document in writing, all relevant information in prescribed format in light of legal ramifications of such. * Ability to converse with co-workers and hospital staff as to status of patient. * Have good manual dexterity, with ability to perform all tasks related to highest quality patient care. * Ability to bend, stoop, and crawl on uneven terrain. * Ability to withstand varied environmental conditions such as extreme heat, cold and moisture. Competency Areas EMT-BASIC: * Demonstrate competency assessing a patient, handling emergencies utilizing Basic Life Support equipment. * Have the ability to perform CPR, control hemorrhage and provide non-invasive shock treatment. * Demonstrate proper techniques for fracture and spinal stabilization. * Demonstrate ability to manage environmental emergencies. * Demonstrate ability to manage emergency childbirth. * Must be capable of performance of all EMT-Basic skills and the skills associated with the maintenance and discontinuation of a pre-established I.V. infusion. (interfacility or facility to home transports)
